Temple Announcement

On October 1, 2023, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Kahului Hawaii Temple at the October 2023 General Conference. It is the first temple to be built in Maui. Latter-day Saint missionaries first arrived in Hawaii in 1850. It is home to Church-owned BYU–Hawaii and the Polynesian Cultural Center. There were two other temples in Hawaii at the time of the announcement. The Kona Hawaii Temple, which was undergoing a major renovation, was dedicated in 2000. The Laie Hawaii Temple was dedicated in 1919. There were nearly 75,000 church members in 145 congregations with more than 4,500 on the island of Maui. Kahului is located about 25 miles east of Lahaina where a devastating wildfire had consumed communities and took dozens of lives in August. The Church provided substantial aid in support of relief efforts.1
