The Mendoza Argentina Temple was the fourth temple built in Argentina, following the Buenos Aires Argentina Temple (1986), the Córdoba Argentina Temple (2015), and the Salta Argentina Temple (2024).
Temple History
Announcement
The Mendoza Argentina Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson on October 7, 2018, at the conclusion of the October 2018 General Conference. It would be the fourth temple constructed in the nation of Argentina. The Buenos Aires Argentina Temple was dedicated in 1986, followed by the Córdoba Argentina Temple in 2015, and the Salta Argentina Temple in 2024. At the time of the announcement, there were nearly 459,000 Church members in Argentina. Members in Mendoza traveled over 400 miles (650 km) to attend temple services at the Córdoba Argentina Temple.1
Site
On June 23, 2020, the location of the Mendoza Argentina Temple was announced. The temple would be constructed in the Champagnat neighborhood on the western edge of the beautiful suburb of Las Heras, a community that borders Mendoza to the north.2
Rendering
On June 23, 2020, an official exterior rendering of the Mendoza Argentina Temple was released. The temple would be a single-story building of approximately 21,000 square feet. Plans also called for the construction of a on-site meetinghouse and arrival center. The single-spire temple was designed with classical proportions chosen to complement the Mendoza region. The art glass windows would feature the jarilla flower, which is native to the region.
Groundbreaking
On Thursday, December 17, 2020, Elder Allen D. Haynie, First Counselor in the South America South Area Presidency, presided at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Mendoza Argentina Temple, which had been delayed several weeks. In his remarks, he stated, "Everything in the temple teaches us about Christ and about His central role in God's plan for our happiness." The sacred structure would be built in the community of Las Heras on Avenida Champagnat along with a meetinghouse and patron housing. Sister Deborah Haynie, Elder Haynie's wife, directed her remarks to the youth. "Learn more about family history work for the next few years and fall in love with it. If you do that, when the temple’s doors open, you can help carry out ordinances on their behalf."3
Open House and Dedication
A public open house for the Mendoza Argentina Temple was held from Thursday, August 22, through Saturday, September 7, 2024, excluding Sundays. Before the public tours began, a media day was held on Monday, August 19, followed by tours for invited guests on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 20–21, 2024. Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles dedicated the temple in two sessions on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. UTC. The proceedings were broadcast to all units in the temple district.4
