Groundbreaking Event Held for the Tarawa Kiribati Temple

"Today’s breaking of the ground is symbolic of planting a giant coconut or breadfruit seed. It will produce the greatest harvest we have seen or can conceive for generations to come," said Elder Jeremy R. Jaggi, General Authority Seventy, at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Tarawa Kiribati Temple on Saturday, November 2, 2024. He warmly greeted His Excellency Taneti Maamau, President of Kiribati and First Lady Madam Teiraeng Maamau who were in attendance. The proceedings were broadcast live to meetinghouses, allowing all members to participate. Elder Jaggi promised, "The temple that will be built in this spot will provide great protection from the storms of life."

Groundbreaking Date Announced for the Tarawa Kiribati Temple

The First Presidency has announced that a groundbreaking ceremony for the Tarawa Kiribati Temple will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024. Elder Jeremy R. Jaggi, Second Counselor in the Pacific Area Presidency, will preside at the event. The temple will be constructed on a 0.8-acre site located across from the Kiribati House of Parliament. Plans call for a single-story temple of approximately 10,000 square feet. Ancillary facilities, including a meetinghouse and patron housing facility, will be located about a quarter mile west of the temple site.

Structures Removed from the Tarawa Kiribati Temple Site

A satellite image of the Tarawa Kiribati Temple property captured in June shows that the former structures on site have been removed. The location and rendering for the temple were released almost two and a half years ago, but no groundbreaking date has been announced. The temple will stand on the 0.8-acre property across from the Kiribati House of Parliament in Ambo, South Tarawa.

Location Announced for the Tarawa Kiribati Temple

The location of the Tarawa Kiribati Temple has been announced as a 0.80-acre site at Ambo, South Tarawa, directly across from the Kiribati House of Parliament. Plans for the temple call for a single-story building of approximately 10,000 square feet with a single spire. Additional facilities, including a meetinghouse and patron housing facility, are in development and will be located 450 meters west of the temple site. No groundbreaking date has been scheduled.
