Temple Announcement
On October 1, 2023, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Calabar Nigeria Temple at the October 2023 General Conference. Calabar, a port city in southern Nigeria, located in West Africa, is home to more than 657,000 residents. The temple will be the fifth in the country, joining the Aba, Benin City, Eket and Lagos temples. At the time of the announcement, there were around 225,000 Latter-day Saints in approximately 770 congregations in Nigeria, which organized its first stake in 1988, ten years after the Church’s presence was established in the country. The first temple in Nigeria, the Aba Nigeria Temple, was dedicated in 2005.1
