Groundbreaking Ceremony

Groundbreaking services for the Calabar Nigeria Temple will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2026. Elder Christian C. Chigbundu, a member of the Africa West Area Presidency, will preside at the event. The temple will rise on a 7-acre property located on Atekong Drive in Calabar. Plans call for a single-story temple of 26,000 square feet along with patron housing, arrival facilities, and a meetinghouse.¹

On November 10, 2025, the official exterior rendering of the Calabar Nigeria Temple was released to the public.

Temple Site

On November 10, 2025, the location of the Calabar Nigeria Temple was announced as a 7-acre property located on Atekong Drive in Calabar. Plans call for a single-story temple of 26,000 square feet along with patron housing, arrival facilities, and a meetinghouse.²

Temple Announcement

On October 1, 2023, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Calabar Nigeria Temple at the October 2023 General Conference. Calabar, a port city in southern Nigeria, located in West Africa, is home to more than 657,000 residents. The temple will be the fifth in the country, joining the Aba, Benin City, Eket and Lagos temples. At the time of the announcement, there were around 225,000 Latter-day Saints in approximately 770 congregations in Nigeria, which organized its first stake in 1988, ten years after the Church’s presence was established in the country. The first temple in Nigeria, the Aba Nigeria Temple, was dedicated in 2005.³
