McConkie III, a General Authority Seventy and counselor in the Europe Central Area Presidency, presided at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Barcelona Spain Temple on Saturday, September 19, 2026. He expressed his hope that "the Barcelona Spain Temple be built and dedicated in such a way that the people of Barcelona feel this truth and are drawn to a place where God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, can be present in a tangible way." The groundbreaking marks the beginning of construction on the second temple in Spain. The event was broadcast to Church congregations in Spain, Andorra, and southern France.

An exterior rendering of the Barcelona Spain Temple has been released. The two-story, 27,500-square-foot building will be constructed on a 5.4-acre site at the intersection of Avinguda de la Vía Augusta and Avinguda de la Clota in Sant Cugat del Vallès, a suburb north of Barcelona. Plans also call for a 13,600-square-foot ancillary building housing a patron arrival center, patron accommodations, and a distribution center.

The location of the Barcelona Spain Temple has been announced as a 5.4-acre site at the intersection of Avinguda de la Vía Augusta and Avinguda de la Clota in Sant Cugat del Vallès, just north of Barcelona. Plans call for a two-story temple of approximately 27,500 square feet. An ancillary building of approximately 13,600 square feet with patron housing, an arrival center, and a distribution center will also be built on site. Detailed plans are still under development and no groundbreaking date has been announced.
