Elder Sandino Román, a member of the Presidency of the South America Northwest Area, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the Iquitos Peru Temple on Saturday, October 10, 2026. In the site dedicatory prayer, he expressed gratitude for the construction of the temple and prayed that it would bless the community. Iquitos is the world’s largest city inaccessible by road, and Church members have traditionally traveled long distances by river or air to attend the temple. The new temple will bring sacred ordinances closer to Latter-day Saints throughout the Amazon region, marking an important milestone in the history of the Church in Peru.

This 20,000-square-foot (1,858-square-meter) house of the Lord will rise on a 1.75-acre (0.7-hectare) site located at Calle San Marcos 117–137 in the San Juan Bautista District of Iquitos. The church stands at Calle San Marcos 117–137 in the San Juan Bautista District of Iquitos. Plans call for a temple of approximately 20,000 square feet. Iquitos is known as the "capital of the Peruvian Amazon." It is the largest city in the world—not on an island—that cannot be reached by road. It is accessible only by river and air.
